Program Overview:

The S.M.A.R.T. Kids (Support and Mentoring through Arts, Recreation, and Tutoring) program is responding to a need to provide educational, social enrichment, and character building programs for children residing in the St. Cloud Salvation Army’s Family Shelter, and children living in other emergency or temporary shelter arrangements in the St. Cloud area. We operate from a trauma informed perspective.

Description of Position:

The SMART Kids (Support and Mentoring through Arts, Recreation, and Tutoring) program mentor’s role is to assist in the day to day operations of the program based on the needs and interests of the children experiencing homelessness and their parents. They will provide programming that is a well structured environment at all times. SMART Kids Program Mentors will connect with children in large group, small group and individual settings by participating in the daily activities of the SMART Kids program. Common activities include outdoor play, board games, recreational activities, homework help, arts and crafts, cooking and baking, reading and playing.

Specific Duties:

  • Participate in the activities of the SMART Kids program.
  • Provide positive mentorship, tutoring and leadership to the children in all activities.
  • Assist with the attendance records and stats for SMART Kids program.
  • Communicates with children, parents and guardians on daily activities.
  • Assist with behavior issues, resolutions, consequences, communicate with staff and parents regarding such issues.
  • Travel with the group throughout community.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients and visitors; respect of others’ property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors and subordinates. Support the Mission of The Salvation Army by treating every donor, contact and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.

Schedule (days, times/shifts): September-May: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2:30-6:00pm (any combination of these hours, depending on desired hours) May-August: Tuesday-Friday 10:00am-1:00pm
Volunteers commit to at least an hour a week during program times for 6 months.
