EVENT DESCRIPTION:

To kick off the busy summer season, the DCR Universal Access Program (UAP) hosts a free Adaptive Recreation Fair at Herter Park/Artesani Playground in Brighton, MA. The fair is a way for people with disabilities and their families to find out about our summer programs, as well as make connections with other organizations and vendors in the state that promote outdoor recreation for everyone. UAP offers face painting and kite decorating and flying at the fair, as well as some adaptive recreation: cycling and letterboxing. Cycling allows attendees to ride around the park with a wide variety of adaptive bicycles, tricycles, and hand cycles, and the letterboxing event leads visitors around the park on a gentle hike, with adaptive hiking wheelchairs available for use if needed.

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING:

Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of activities during the fair, including face painting, kite decorating and flying, as well as some adaptive recreation, including cycling and letterboxing.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Training on all activities will begin at 9 a.m. No prior experience is needed. Orientations are provided for all activities. Volunteers do not need to be cyclists or hikers themselves to help out with those activities, since we need help with everything from helmet fitting to signing people up. The fair takes place outdoors rain or shine, so volunteers should dress for the weather. We’ll provide drinks and light snacks throughout the day.

WHERE TO MEET:

Volulnteers should meet at the volunteer registration table at Herter Park near Artesani Playground, 1255 Soldier’s Field Rd. Brighton, MA 01035. Parking will be available in the lot at 1255 Soldier's Field Road. In addition, MBTA bus routes 86, 70, and 66 stop near the park. The Event Manager will contact all volunteers with more information about the meeting location.

UNIVERSAL ACCESS PROGRAM - MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND RECREATION:

The Universal Access Program (UAP) is a program within the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) that is dedicated to providing recreation opportunities in Massachusetts State Parks to visitors of all abilities. Since 1995, the Universal Access Program has been working to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to Massachusetts state parks and other properties. The UAP coordinates with vendors and parks to offer accessible facilities and activities throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, year-round. The summer is our busiest time, with kayaking, canoeing, sailing, rowing, hiking, biking, and horseback riding programs stretching from Boston to the Berkshires.

Mission Statement

One Brick provides support to local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. We enable people to get involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

Description

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, One Brick is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings volunteers together to support other local non-profits by adopting an innovative twist to the volunteer experience: we create a friendly and social atmosphere around volunteering, and after each volunteer event -- which typically lasts only 3 to 4 hours -- we invite volunteers to gather at a local restaurant or caf where they can get to know one another in a relaxed social setting.

Our 'commitment-free volunteering' allows you to choose when you volunteer, rather than having to make commitments for a certain number of volunteer hours, or agree to be available every week at a specific time.
