Our Independent Living (IL) is a way of life for persons who live with disabilities. IL specialists assist these consumers in overcoming the hurdles and challenges of everyday living with a disability. An IL specialist trainee will gain meaningful, real‐world experience in the five core services areas, including activities in: Information and Referral, Independent Living planning, Advocacy and Peer support. Trainee candidates can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in many of these activities:

‐ Peer support.

‐ Tracking and reporting consumer progress.

‐ Developing a network of local resources.

‐ Interagency partnership and collaboration.

‐ Systems advocacy and Independent Living skills.

‐ Information and Referral.

Professional Objectives

Independent Living Specialist:

-Assist Independent Living staff with Information and Referral and follow up.

-Develop skills in individual and systems advocacy.

-Track consumer progress and interactions.

-Plan peer support and social events.

-Support educational events activities.


General responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

-Recording and tracking consumer interactions.

-Outreach to sister agencies.

-Supporting educational, social, peer support and advocacy events.

-Attend weekly staff meetings.
