The Durham Literacy Center is seeking tutors to help adult learners prepare for GED tests! No prior tutoring experience is necessary.
What would I teach? The GED includes four subject tests: math, science, social studies, and reading/writing. Volunteers can work with students in one or more of these subjects. A 2-hour training is provided, and you will get a chance to see the prep materials prior to deciding which subject or subjects you will teach. Program staff provide ongoing support as needed.
Who would I teach? Each tutor is matched with one adult learner who reads at or above a 9th grade level and wants to earn a GED diploma.
When would I teach? Tutors choose their own schedules during our classroom hours, which are Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9am-12pm and 4:30pm-8:30pm. We ask tutors to meet with their students twice a week for 90-minute lessons, but once-a-week (2-hour) schedules are also possible.
Where would I teach? 1905 Chapel Hill Road, Durham, NC 27707
We are currently scheduling Volunteer Orientations for individuals interested in this role. If you respond to this listing, we will email you with additional information.
The start and end dates are the time in which this posting will be up, not how long the commitment is. We ask for a one semester commitment, which will be early September through mid-December for the Fall Semester. We can work around most pre-existing travel plans or other required breaks. (It is fine to take the week of Thanksgiving off, for example.) Please email us with any questions.
