Background: Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization based in Eugene. Our nonprofit public mission is to tell the human story through the use of digital technology with an emphasis on media programming. Our streaming-media Web site, The Archaeology Channel (www.archaeologychannel.org; TAC), has become one of the world’s most popular Web sites relating to archaeology and the human cultural heritage, with annual traffic of nearly a million page views. ALI also produces The Archaeology Channel International Film Festival, an annual cultural event in downtown Eugene. We currently work out of a home office and are looking to move into commercial office space. ALI has numerous opportunities for unlimited growth as an Internet media and public outreach organization and needs to expand its volunteer work force in order to take advantage of these opportunities. Some of our volunteers may become our employees, depending upon their productivity and effectiveness.
Hourly Commitment: 10 hours per week or by negotiation
Compensation: This is a volunteer or internship position.
Job Purpose: To create closed captioning files for selected films through the use of software designed for that purpose.
Description: Our mission requires that we create programming for public benefit and consumption and that we distribute that programming for fund-raising purposes and audience generation. Our Closed Captioning Specialist will be responsible for viewing films selected for our Amazon Video Direct service and documenting the audio tracks in the closed captioning software to generate files that make the closed captioning subtitles for the films. This is a chance to help accelerate the progress of a dynamic and growing nonprofit enterprise. You will be joining an innovative team on a mission to create a unique media organization with worldwide influence. Your help here will have a direct impact on ALI's productivity and ability to pursue its public mission. The experience you gain will be directly transferable to other technical positions you may seek in the future.
Key Responsibilities: Viewing films, generating closed captioning files for our Amazon video service.
Requirements: We prefer people who have an interest in this kind of work and can appreciate the value of closed captioning for the hearing impaired and foreign-language speakers. We will train you in this task, so you don’t need prior experience with closed captioning. Must be local.
To Apply: Contact Dr. Richard Pettigrew by telephone (541-345-5538) or e-mail (rick@archaeologychannel.org). A resume is required.

Mission Statement
In recognition that the archaeological record is the legacy of all human beings, the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) is founded to bring the benefits of archaeology to a wider constituency. Its mission is to develop ways to make archaeology more effective both in gathering important information about past human lifeways and in delivering that information to the public and the profession. A fundamental postulate is that archaeology has important messages to deliver accurately and completely to the people of our planet about our origins and development as a species, and that among these messages are those about mistakes we have made in the past and must not make in the future. In essence, ALI is devoted to archaeological research and its contributions to science and to humanity. In the furtherance of this mission, ALI, its associates, and its employees adhere to the Principles of Archaeological Ethics promulgated by the Society for American Archaeology.
Description
ALI is dedicated to telling the story of humanity as revealed by archaeology and indigenous peoples. We largely employ the Internet to accomplish our goals, principally through The Archaeology Channel, our streaming video website at www.archaeologychannel.org. ALI was founded in late 1999. We have a very small paid staff, but we do have a dedicated group of volunteers who believe in our vision of sharing archaeological knowledge for the good of humanity. Our website is designed to be a tool for teachers and students as well as the general public, all over the world.
