The Durham Literacy Center

If you can read this, you can help share the gift of literacy with an adult learner!

Who will you help? Adults who would like to improve their basic reading and writing skills in order to achieve a variety of personal goals (e.g., apply for jobs, help their children or grandchildren with homework, write a letter or email, read financial and legal documents such as leases and bank statements).

What will you do? Tutors meet one-on-one with students twice per week to reach literacy-related goals using methods taught during a 12-hour tutor training series.

When will you meet? The DLC is open Monday-Thursday from 9am to 12pm and from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. The minimum commitment is a 90-minute lesson twice per week (3 hours total per week). Lesson schedules are based on the availability of each tutor and student. We will work with your schedule.

Where will you meet? The DLC is located at 1905 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham, NC 27707. Our 2-story building is located across the street from the Lakewood Shopping Plaza and just down the street from the Lakewood YMCA. Free parking is available in our parking lot.

How long is the commitment? We ask all literacy tutors to make a 6-month commitment. Most tutors choose to continue beyond this initial commitment. If you are not sure that you will be able to tutor for at least 6 months, please let us know. We may be able to match you with an adult learner who is uncertain about his or her long-term schedule or find an alternative placement for you.

Come to an upcoming Volunteer Orientation to learn more about this opportunity!

The next round of Volunteer Orientations will take place in August 2018, Our semester begins in September. If you respond to this listing, we will email you with additional information.

The start and end dates are the time in which this posting will be up, not how long the commitment is. Please email us with any questions.
