Project Description:

The Help Line Service provides both practical information and emotional support to people who have experienced a stroke as well as family members, caregivers, professionals, students and anyone else seeking information or emotional support related to stroke. The primary role of the Help Line volunteer provides information and support in a safe and confidential environment. The Help Line volunteer aspires to meet callers’ needs by being warm, friendly and professional, by providing a listening ear and by providing accurate and reliable information.

This volunteer will offer person-centered emotional support and information to people affected by stroke over the telephone. He or she will develop and maintain knowledge on social and medical issues that relate to people affected by stroke, including statutory services and welfare benefits. He or she will maintain knowledge of other organizations and services that can help people affected by stroke and share when appropriate. The volunteer will record information about inquiries on our database in line with our data protection policy. He or she will also keep up to date with stroke news and our work across the United States.

Responsibilities of the Help Line Volunteer:

  • To provide accurate information & support in a non-directive, non-judgmental manner
  • To make a record of each call and carry out any action required
  • To ensure caller confidentiality within the Help Line team
  • To give reasonable notice of non-availability
  • To seek back-up and support from the National Stroke Association staff if needed
  • To check the Help Line Desk for information updates at the start of each shift.
  • To adhere to Help Line policies and procedures
  • To attend support group meetings and training sessions

Skills and Qualifications Needed:

  • Non Judgmental
  • Patient
  • Flexible
  • Fluent English, Spanish is a plus
