Mission Statement
Kings and Clowns provides fundamental arts education and performance opportunities for young artists in music, dance, and the performing arts. The volunteer Board of Directors and administration ensures that every child has access to quality arts education through in-school and after-school programs throughout Los Angeles.
Description
Kings & Clowns, now known as Arts Alive, was formed as an educational non-profit to bring classical theatre to students in schools. More training was requested by these schools so Kings & Clowns in Training was instituted to bring high quality theatre training to students. Based at the Hermosa Playhouse, between 2001 and 2005, thirteen award winning plays were produced. Realizing Arts education programs were being cut at an alarming rate, Debbie Wastling began expanding classes in music and Performing Arts at the local elementary schools where she was teaching under the program name Arts Alive.
Fifteen years of continual growth has expanded the program to allow Arts Alive teaching artists visit 15 schools and serve over 630 students each quarter. The following subjects are taught: guitar, drums, Symphony, rock band, woodwinds, keyboard, strings, visual arts, drama, Polynesian dance, as well as ballet and jazz dance. Arts Alive partner schools range from elementary and middle schools throughout LA County from Long Beach to San Pedro to Downtown LA. Each school chooses the subjects to be taught according to student interest. All classes are taught by professional artists/educators.
