The Northside Back to School Health and Resource Fair planning committee is recruiting volunteers to prepare over 2,000 students for the school year. On Thursday, August 2nd, 50 volunteers over two shifts will sort boxes of backpacks and school supplies, remove the items from the boxes, and stuff the backpacks with paper, pencils, folders, and more!

The two three hour shifts require continuous physical activity. Some of the boxes may be up to 20 pounds. Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided. There is also a brief safety training for lifting and moving boxes on the day of the event.

  • Shift A: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Shift B: 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

All day opportunities are available for super volunteers! Potential volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

Mission Statement

Jessica Farrar is currently in her eleventh term as State Representative of District 148. She was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1994 at the age of 27, and she is the longest serving Hispanic member from Harris County in the Texas House of Representatives.

Description

Rep. Farrar currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence and is a member of the House Committee on State Affairs. In addition, Representative Farrar serves as the Chairwoman of the Texas House Women’s Health Caucus. During the 82nd Legislative session, she served as the Leader of the Texas House Democratic Caucus.

Representative Farrar works extensively on issues related to the environment, women’s health, children's healthcare, education, taxes, homeowner rights, homeland and border security, domestic violence, sexual assault, reproductive rights, insurance coverage, transportation, discrimination, and criminal and juvenile justice.

Rep. Farrar grew up in Houston. She received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law. She is married to Lieutenant Colonel Marco Sanchez, who is a practicing attorney. They live in Houston's Lindale Park neighborhood with their dogs, Cricket, Gator, and Possum.
