Open Arms of Minnesota (OAM) is a nonprofit that prepares and delivers healthy, nutritious food to people living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Our mission is to nourish mind, body and soul. Our vision is a world of abundance, where no one goes hungry. In our state-of-the-art kitchen, OAM staff members and more than 7,000 volunteers create meals specifically designed for our clients’ nutritional needs. We use fresh and, whenever possible, organic ingredients, including produce from our own garden. Volunteers deliver the meals throughout the Twin Cities metro area to approximately 1,000 clients, caregivers and dependents, providing nourishment and hope for families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. There are no fees for any of Open Arms’ services. Open Arms is a volunteer-driven organization and is culturally unique in our high commitment to an excellent volunteer experience.

Each summer, OAM functions as the sponsor for the Summer Meals Program, which is a federally funded, state-administered program. The program reimburses providers who serve healthy meals to children and teens in low-income areas during the summer months when school is not in session. We partner with two sites to provide meals to neighborhood kids each summer: East Phillips Recreation Center and Pillsbury Club Theatre.

Mission Statement

It’s a simple notion: people who are sick should not be without food. Yet, every day, our neighbors with life-threatening illnesses find themselves unable to shop or cook -- and, often, without the support network to help. That’s where we come in. Open Arms of Minnesota is a nonprofit organization that prepares and delivers nourishing meals free of charge to critically ill Minnesotans and their loved ones. Our registered dietitians and in-house chefs create delicious, medically tailored menus using fresh and organic ingredients whenever possible. Through the support of a loving community of donors and volunteers, we harvest, cook, and deliver nutritious, made-from-scratch meals directly to our clients. At Open Arms, we believe that food is medicine, and there’s always room for one more at our table.

Description

Open Arms began as a single act of kindness in 1986 - Bill Rowe, our founder, cooking food in his apartment and delivering it to a handful of neighbors living with AIDS who had become too sick to cook for themselves.

Three decades later, our operation has grown into an organization with a state-of-the-art facilities in Minneapolis and St. Paul, which has allowed us to prepare and deliver millions of meals for thousands of clients and their loved ones. We have also since opened our arms wider to include more qualifying illnesses, such as cancer, MS, ALS, ESRD, CHF, COPD, and more.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Open Arms.

From preparing medically tailored meals in our state-of-the-art kitchen to delivering our nourishing food to our critically ill clients, every aspect of our operations is made possible because of the incredible dedication of our volunteers.

Join us in making a profound difference for our neighbors living with life-threatening illnesses. Whether you’re part of an organization or an individual wanting to make a difference, we have a wide variety of opportunities and will work with you to find the perfect fit for your skills, interests, and availability.

We have locations in both Minneapolis (2500 Bloomington Ave, Minneapolis MN 55404) and St. Paul (380 E Lafayette Frontage Rd, St. Paul MN 55107.)
