Are you age 60 or better and passionate about combating myths & stereotypes related to aging?

Are you interested in engaging young people in conversations about what exactly they think it means to get old?

Heights and Hills is seeking volunteers aged 60 or better to become Aging 101 Ambassadors for our popular inter-generational program: Aging 101 & the Birthday Card Collective.

Ambassadors will work as a team under the supervision of the Director of Volunteer Programs to help bring our interactive Aging 101 workshop to young people in the 19 Brooklyn communities we serve: https://www.heightsandhills.org.

This key volunteer position will help to extend the resources within the Volunteer Program to meet the growing demand for this unique, popular and free service learning opportunity.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with a small group of like-minded volunteers to facilitate our 40 minute Aging 101 workshop with a wide variety of community and school partners.
  • Travel to a diverse group of Brooklyn locations within Heights and Hills catchment area.
  • Liaison with a diverse group of community partners including public and private elementary schools, summer camps and after school programs, religious youth groups and other groups of young people.

Qualifications:

  • Must be aged 60 or better
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in engaging elementary-age youth in a classroom or group setting
  • Enjoy working with young people and passionate about inter-generational programming
  • Willing to learn about Heights and Hills mission and act as Ambassador for organizational mission, values and programs
  • Must be courteous, personable and flexible when dealing with community partners and the public
  • Sense of humor and patience

Time Commitment: Must be available to conduct 1 workshop a month from October 2018 to June 2019; Must commit to attend one orientation & training session in either June or September.

Older adults' skills, experience, and wisdom enhance our civic organizations and institutions as well as individual lives. Further, older adults are entitled to live as independently as possible, with dignity and personal choice. In support of our mission, Heights and Hills operates three programs for older adults and their families: Case management for older adults, Caregiver support to family members, friends or neighbors who aid loved ones, and the Volunteer team who recruits appropriate volunteers to perform one or two of these services: the friendly visiting program, a volunteer becomes a companion to a senior and visits every week for an hour's time. Special Project volunteers aid in a variety of areas, this can be a grocery trip on behalf of a client, delivering birthday flowers or a much-needed wheelchair, this is a flexible opportunity.

Heights and Hills is a large social service case management agency located in downtown Brooklyn, New York. We serve approximately 19 neighborhoods in Brooklyn which includes aiding 800+ seniors a month so that they live safely and autonomously in their homes. We believe older adults are assets to their communities. Furthermore, Older adults' skills, experience, and wisdom enhance our civic organizations and institutions as well as individual lives; and older adults are an economic asset to communities.
