The Ensemble at The Seeing Place
Our team is excited to meet you!

Hello! We're a 8-year-old independent theater in NYC who recently got our 501c3 status. We're looking to upgrade our accounting to Quickbooks and become fully compliant with IRS reporting needs. We'd like to find someone who can help us set up our books, and then assist us in setting up our IRS filings. Why is this important for us? We're a non-profit theater that is rapidly growing, with intentions of becoming a permanent, robust home for artists to make a living wage and create art that makes a difference. To do this, we have to make sure that our financials are clearly recorded, tracked, and reported. Our work has a social impact and explores issues that our society is grappling with deeply. Our current repertory includes three plays that explore activism, most notably the whistleblowers, and the roadblocks a society places in front of those who are the first to speak out. And most importantly, 20% of our tickets are given for free to the community so that anyone can afford to come to the theater.

We are a rapidly growing independent theater company, and we're excited to finally be able to match our financial reporting with the popularity of our art. Someone helping us will be able to take pride in taking our organization to the next level, and in helping artists understand the importance of detailed records and financial health. We are currently volunteer based and qualify for the 990-EZ, and we need to file a few CHAR500 to catch up from previous years. We have up to date books through Excel. All work would be done virtually, so we can take any volunteer who understands the needs of a small theater in New York City. I have prepared all of our financials to date in Excel documents, and I'm prepared to order the monthly Quickbooks online membership so that our account can be shared easily. We can easily work by phone or email, so it's no need to be in the same city. We simply need someone who understands New York tax laws and federal tax codes. We have a strong and eager board ready to help keep things going once this project is complete.

Mission Statement

Our name "The Seeing Place" is the literal translation of the Greek word for theater (theatron): ". . . the place where we go to see ourselves." The Seeing Place is an actor-driven company dedicated to exploring the intersection between the actor's voice and the playwright's words, by reinterpreting masterful works live and in the moment to make them relevant, visceral, truthful, and accessible to a modern audience. We live up to our name by engaging our community in a vivid conversation about what makes us human. Connection. Learning. Humanity. That's what theater is all about.

Description

The Seeing Place is an actor-driven company: built by actors and managed by actors to be a base for actors who want to hone their craft in a creative and supportive artistic home, resulting in unparalleled dedication and excellence.

Theater is society's hands-on, in-person study of human behavior. By placing a keen focus on behavioral storytelling, The Seeing Place has become well-known for intense and intimate ensemble work. Productions are rehearsed in a structured, organic manner, involving improvisation and heavy script analysis.

In performance, emphasis is placed on key elements of acting craft, allowing actors the freedom to live and discover the story, moment to moment, with the audience on a nightly basis. Many audience members have marveled that they feel like a fly-on-the-wall observer of a real event, not only witnessing it but living through it with us.

We accomplish this by training our ensemble artists on a weekly basis, not only in the artistic elements of acting but also the overall craft of theater-making, including producing (fundraising, marketing, budgeting), community outreach (social media, audience development) and stage craft (props, costumes, set construction.)

We have a keen focus on working with artists of all types, particularly those that are in minority groups - women, seniors, people of color, LGBTQ, and those with disabilities.
