Mission: Literacy, Read to a Child

Did you know that 35% of children enter school academically at risk? In addition, upon entering the first grade, a middle-class child has enjoyed 1000 to 1700 hours of one-on-one reading while a low-income child has experienced only 25 hours of one-on-one reading. What better gift to give children than instilling confidence and a love of reading? We have the perfect opportunity available to do just that! The purpose of Mission: Literacy is to significantly increase the percentage of children able to read at grade level. It was also created to help children discover the joy of reading God’s word. In accomplishing these primary objectives, the program will also help to break the cycle of illiteracy, to establish caring relationships between tutors and children, and to have children embrace the conviction that reading is a useful and enjoyable activity. This highly individualized approach secures both the attention and support critical to educational and spiritual development. Mission: Literacy combines a phonics and whole language approach to decoding words. Active, hands-on learning is also a catalyst to its success. A rewarding experience you will treasure forever, as will the children.

Mission Statement

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Description

Provides basic human needs of food, clothing, shelter, and spiritual assistance as a Christian church

At The Salvation Army, donating your time can go a long way towards helping your community. Throughout the year we provide many resources to those in need including food, personal items, clothing, toys, and bill assistance. During Christmas we are able to provide toys and food vouchers to thousands of families and individuals. Our major fundraising is done through our Red Kettle Christmas Campaign, otherwise known as Bell Ringing. In 2013, we were able to provide over 1500 vouchers for Christmas dinners and gave presents to over 2900 children, who would have otherwise gone without. For 2014, our Kettle Campaign goal is $275,000. We can only reach this goal with your help!
