ORGANIZATION: Brazos Valley Literacy Coalition

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 4 people are interested

This supervisory position looks great on a resume! You are on a team of event coordinators so you do not have to supervise every event. Each person on the event coordinator team coordinates at least one library event. The Mounce Library holds 2 events per month.

Duties during events are as follows (yet may vary depending upon the event):

  • Supervise other volunteers.
  • Oversee event set up (i.e. volunteers set up chairs, move tables, set up activities or food on tables as needed).
  • Take pictures of the event with the library camera.
  • Oversee all activity or food tables.
  • Oversee ticket distribution.
  • Maintain crowds within legal capacity.
  • Provide what the presenter needs.
  • Oversee event clean up (i.e. having volunteers put chairs/ tables back where they belong).
  • Troubleshoot when needed with the children's librarians.
  • Download pictures from the library camera to the librarian's flash drive.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Brazos Valley Literacy Coalition is four-fold: To help better the lives of adults in our community who suffer from functional illiteracy. To help adults in our community learn English so that they can understand medical professionals, talk with their child’s teacher, get a job or advance in the one they have, and keep safe in the workplace. To help young children (0-5) gain a foundation of literacy skills needed to enter school ready to succeed. To help school aged children advance in reading skills to read on or above grade level.

Description

The Brazos Valley Literacy Coalition started in 2016 as a collaboration between Bryan/College Station Library System, the Friends of the BCS Library System, and Workforce Solutions of the Brazos Valley. The following year many other community organizations and Brazos Valley libraries met to address urgent literacy needs. Within the coalition there are three committees. Each committee addresses specific age groups with literacy solutions:

  1. Adult Literacy (adults 18 and above, functionally illiterate)
  2. Early Literacy (ages 0-5)
  3. School-Aged Literacy (grades K-12)
