Position: Friendship Walk Intern

Program: Best Buddies Friendship Walk

Time Commitment: 10- 20 hours/week; 3-month minimum commitment

Location: Best Buddies California office/Off-site

SUMMARY:

The Best Buddies Friendship Walk is the number one walk in the country raising awareness and funds to support inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The intern would support the planning of the Inland Empire Walk.

JOB SUMMARY:

The intern, along with Best Buddies staff, supports the planning of the Inland Empire Friendship Walk through a series of tasks; researching community organizations and businesses, event planning, soliciting in kind donations, and recruiting volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Team Development

  1. Community Teams: works to identify and recruit new community teams for the Best Buddies Friendship Walk. This includes development of the community teams over the course of the walk planning season to help coach with team engagement, communication, creating goals and fundraising.
  2. Corporate Teams: works to identify and recruit corporate teams for the Best Buddies Friendship Walk. His/her position also includes development of the corporate teams over the course of the walk planning season to help coach with team engagement, communication, creating goals and fundraising and request sponsorships. This can include scheduling meetings at the companies where Best Buddies staff and an ambassador speak about the program to engage employees.
  3. Incentives: works to identify incentive prizes and requesting in kind donation for our incentive fundraising challenges.

  1. Sponsorships

The intern would provide support in securing corporate sponsorships for the Best Buddies Friendship walk within the community. This includes making a target ask list, researching contact people for each company, and providing support to the Best Buddies staff in making asks.

  1. Kick Off

Help coordinate the Kick Off by finding a location, planning logistics, and working with staff to invite community members and companies.

  1. Logistics

  1. Volunteer Recruitment: responsible for recruiting 50 volunteers for event day through reaching out of volunteer websites, community services groups, companies, and school clubs.
  2. Solicitation of in kind donations: responsible for overseeing all necessary donations are in place for event day including, but not limited to food and water, snacks, decorations, entertainment, cones, signage, etc. The intern will reach out to local businesses, both new and existing relationships to find donations.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with adults with Intellectual and Development Disabilities (IDD), and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to adults with IDD;
  • A passion for Best Buddies’ work and mission;
  • Excellent telephone and e-mail etiquette;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs-Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  • Responsible, respectful and dependable;
  • Previous fundraising experience a plus;
  • Willingness to travel and participate in Friendship Walk activities/events.

TRAINING, AND/OR EDUCATION:

  • None-opportunity based on experience;
  • Training will be provided on-site.
