General Function
Visitor services volunteers are responsible for welcoming and orienting visitors to the Harry Ransom Center and ensuring all visitors have a positive and enjoyable experience. This high-visibility position serves an important role at the Ransom Center because volunteers are the first point of contact for visitors. The function of the visitor services volunteer is two-fold: to be a resource to our visitors and to actively support Ransom Center visitor desk goals (collecting emails, surveys, etc.).
Time Commitment
Position requires a 3-hour per week regularly scheduled commitment from August 2018 through July 2019. Weekday and weekend shifts are available. Mandatory training occurs in July and August, 2018.
Job Responsibilities
Greet visitors to the Harry Ransom Center and proactively solicit surveys, email addresses, and donations. Duties include:
-Fielding questions
-Sharing information about the Ransom Center and its collections, exhibitions, and programs
-Asking for survey responses, email addresses, and donations.
Volunteers will be expected to:
-Be outgoing and proactive in greeting guests and collecting info
-Keep informed of exhibitions, programs, and special events
-Enforce policies and protocols
-Ensure desk is organized and well-stocked with museum literature
-Work in cooperation with visitor desk staff, gallery attendants, and guards to ensure all visitors’ needs are met.
Qualifications
Friendly and outgoing individual with strong communication and customer service skills, who is resourceful, listens well, is very comfortable interacting with the public, and has an interest in supporting the Ransom Center’s outreach goals. Ability to maintain pleasant attitude even under stress and handle multiple tasks preferred. Ages 18+.

Description
One of the world's finest cultural archives, the Harry Ransom Center houses 36 million literary manuscripts, one million rare books, five million photographs, and over 100,000 works of art. Highlights include the Gutenberg Bible (c.1455), the First Photograph (c.1826) and important paintings by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The Center is used extensively by scholars from around the world and presents numerous exhibitions and events showcasing its collections.
