General Function
Special event volunteers are responsible for welcoming program attendees to the Harry Ransom Center and ensuring all attendees have a positive and enjoyable experience. The primary function of the special event volunteer is to provide great customer service and ask attendees to complete email/comment cards.
Time Commitment
Position requires at least 3 events per month (each event lasts approximately 4 hours) from August 2018 through July 2019. Evening and weekend availability is required, because almost all programs/events occur on weekday evenings or on Saturdays. Mandatory training occurs in July and August, 2018.
Job Responsibilities
Greet and orient visitors to events at the Harry Ransom Center. Provide courteous, welcoming, and informed customer service. Duties include:
-Distributing and collecting comment and email cards
-Fielding questions
-Actively offering advice and information
-Ushering
-Taking attendance and observational demographic data
Volunteers will be expected to:
-Be outgoing and proactive in greeting guests
-Enforce event policies and protocols
-Keep informed of exhibitions and upcoming programs
-Work in cooperation with staff and guards to ensure all visitors’ needs are met
Qualifications
Friendly individual who is comfortable on the front line of an event with strong communication and customer service skills. Candidates should listen well, be comfortable interacting with the public, and have an interest in supporting the Ransom Center’s public outreach goals. Ability to maintain pleasant attitude under pressure is important. Ages 18+.

Description
One of the world's finest cultural archives, the Harry Ransom Center houses 36 million literary manuscripts, one million rare books, five million photographs, and over 100,000 works of art. Highlights include the Gutenberg Bible (c.1455), the First Photograph (c.1826) and important paintings by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The Center is used extensively by scholars from around the world and presents numerous exhibitions and events showcasing its collections.
