ORGANIZATION: LIBERTY CAMP FOR KIDS

There are many ways to volunteer for Liberty Camp For Kids and Little Patriots Village. You can become involved on any level. Review the options below.

Group Leaders,
wearing costumes of the time period, lead the campers from station to station. They talk about what the campers have learned in previous stations and help to tie everything together through. They may assist Station Leaders when requested with lessons that may require an extra set of hands and they sign out the campers to their parents at the end of the session.

Station Leaders have several options. We have three "teaching" stations where the leaders present the lessons as they help the campers to feel a part of history as they enter the past. Some are our founders and dress the part. They present in first person and the campers join them in the actions that happened many years ago. We also have a "snack" station where the leader will have snacks typical of Colonial America. They describe how the snack is prepared and how the children enjoyed it years ago. They also introduce visitors to the station who share other elements of Colonial life and historic events. The "craft" station leaders guide the campers through their craft project that enhances the lessons of the day. The "games" station direct the campers to famous Colonial games such as "Hoop and Stick," "Minutemen Relay," and "British Dodge Ball," all while showing how each related to the life and times. Station Leaders wear costumes of the time period.

Station Leaders Assistants assist the station leaders and provide an extra set of hands.

Re-enactors are welcome at all times, but especially on Friday when they share their person experience of being involved in the founding of our country as they present in the different stations! Some wander in and out of specific stations to provide that special touch to each lesson during the week. (Some costumes are available.)

Administrative Assistants greet the campers every morning and assist in signing them in. They help with questions from parents and directing campers to their groups.

Set up/Take Down Crew arrive 45 minutes to an hour before the camp starts and assist in setting up tables and chairs, posters, canopies, charts and signage. They return at the close of the camp and spend 30 minutes to tear down.

Costumes Assistants are helpful in so many ways, before, during and after camp. They can assist in organizing, collecting, and/or making costumes, making sure costumes fit properly and that the costumes are there on the days they are needed. This is usually handled before camp begins and during the first day or two.

Snacks Planners help to shop for the snacks that are scheduled and prepare for the paper products that are needed throughout the week.

Craft Assistants help to gather the supplies for each craft during the week in the numbers needed. They may help with assembly of some crafts before camp begins and may offer assistance during camp.

Opening/Closing Ceremonies Coordinators assist with the planning of opening and closing of camp. Camp begins with the presentation of the flag and a brief orientation of meanings and/or protocols of flag etiquette. Local, state and federal elected officials are invited to speak and share how they work for us all. The events of the day are foreshadowed before the campers begin their rotations, and they are reviewed with the common phrase, "What did you learn today?" as campers are encouraged to take the microphone to share.

First Aid Director is responsible for making sure each group leader has the appropriate first response items in their group leader bags (gloves, bandaids, hand sanitizer, etc.) and they are available during camp should they be needed.

Camp Bags Coordinator plans the special "give away" items that each camper receives on the last day of camp. The coordinator can seek donations for recruiting centers, local politicians, or businesses. They prepare the bags with campers’ names and make sure they are ready to go on Friday. Items from the different stations may also be included in the camp bags.

Website Coordinator is responsible for adding pictures and video to the website. They may help with changing the forms from year to year.

Mission Statement

The purpose of Liberty Camp for Kids is to provide hands-on experiences about the founding of our nation by providing an environment that recreates the events before, during, and after the American Revolution.

Description

Liberty Camp for Kids, where Kids Experience the Founding of America, is a half-day Week-long camp held during the third full week in July for first through sixth graders, is now in its eighth year. Campers participate in seven different stations every day during the week of camp, including three learning stations; a craft, a snack, and a game station; and even a Native American village. Hands-on activities include re-enacting the Boston TEA Party, marching with George Washington through the icy waters to win the Battle of Trenton, signing the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights, eating food that children in colonial times ate, playing the games they played, writing with a quill and ink, learning from Betsy Ross how to make a five pointed star, and much more. They even get to meet Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Patrick Henry, and many other historical figures.
