Position: Patient Campeon Intern (unpaid)

Employer: Champions for Health (CFH)

Reports to: Project Access Manager

Champions for Health is a nonprofit organization (Tax ID #95-2568714) dedicated to help those without or limited access to healthcare. Our internship provides an unparalleled opportunity for professional growth and development and will prepare the intern to be an ambassador in their profession. Interns will have frequent contact public health experts, physicians, civically-minded health professionals and health organizations. Interns will have the opportunity to aid our mission to provide pro bono specialty care, conduct field research and work along staff dedicated towards a healthy San Diego.

Position Overview:

The Patient Campeon intern is responsible assisting with our Project Access San Diego program. This program coordinates care for patients who are un-insurable to receive pro-bono specialty care from volunteer physicians and partners. The intern will assist with the coordination of care, research on health/ legal resources to disseminate to patients/ partners, and evaluate program protocols. Will be an ambassador to the population that is most vulnerable and often ignored.

Essential Functions:

The Patient Campeon Intern will be in communication with partnering Project Access San Diego leaders and patients. They will assist our Patient Care Manager and Project Access Manager to provide coordination of care and liaison to community partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under supervision, the Patient Campeon Intern will:

  • Coordinate with Project Access Manager and Patient Care Manager
  • Assess and evaluate programs, perform research on diseases that affect the Latino population
  • Assist with health partner recruitment and retention
  • Present lectures to group/individuals on a health topic, as appropriate
  • Interpret for patients or translate documents
  • Evaluate patient data and work with team to recommend next steps, if needed.
  • Work with team to create and sustain marketing plan
  • Input data into our tracking system
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned


  • Near completion of undergraduate or graduate degree, preferred, health promotion or health sciences, Spanish, Public Health, Latino Studies *Do not need to be enrolled in a school to be considered*
  • Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills.
  • Fluent in Spanish is required
  • Time commitment: 6 or more hours a week at our office in Kearney Mesa. Flexibility to work some weekends for events.
  • Strong calling to support the underserved through health and medicine.
