Cardiac Disparities Internship Description
Position: Cardiac Disparities Intern (unpaid)
Employer: Champions for Health (CFH)
Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator
Champions for Health is a nonprofit organization (Tax ID #95-2568714) dedicated to help those without or limited access to healthcare. Our internship provides an unparalleled opportunity for professional growth and development and will prepare the intern to be an ambassador in their profession. Interns will have frequent contact public health experts, physicians, civically-minded health professionals and health organizations. Interns will have the opportunity to aid our mission to provide pro bono specialty care, conduct field research and work along staff dedicated towards a healthy San Diego.
Position Overview:
The Cardiac Disparities intern is responsible for managing and assisting with our blood pressure screenings and cardiac health evaluation. This intern will be researching strategic locations/areas with high rate of heart disease and be responsible for increasing collaboration with community partners. Will support in coordinating blood pressure screening events, evaluating data, and recommending next steps.
Essential Functions:
This intern will be managing blood pressure equipment inventory, researching committees/ coalitions that work with heart health, and evaluating results. Will be trained on how to effectively perform a blood pressure screening.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under supervision, the Cardiac Disparities Intern will:
- Coordinate blood pressure screening events in strategic locations
- Assess and evaluate programs, perform research on relevant topics, and revise presentation materials as appropriate
- Assist with partner recruitment and retention
- Present lectures to group/individuals on heart disease prevention, as appropriate
- Participate in the South Eastern San Diego Cardiac Disparities Project, Love Your Heart, and similar meetings
- Evaluate patient data and work with team to recommend treatment
- Work with team to create and sustain marketing plan
- Perform additional job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Near completion of undergraduate or graduate degree, preferred, in community health education, public health, health promotion or health sciences. *Do not need to be enrolled in a school to be considered*
- Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills.
- Fluent in Spanish is a plus but not required
- Time commitment: 5 or more hours a week at our office in Kearney Mesa. Flexibility to work some weekends for events.
- Strong calling to support the underserved through health and medicine.
