About Teens Run DC
Location:
700 Pennsylvania Ave SE, WASHINGTON, DC 20003, US
Mission Statement
Teens Run DC empowers youth from underserved communities to envision and work towards the achievement of personal goals through a youth mentoring and distance running program. Over an academic year, TRDC Coaches, Mentors, and Friends challenge and guide these youth to develop the skills necessary to achieve their running goals and their life goals
Description
During the year, students train alongside Teens Run DC coaches, volunteer teaches, and individual mentors who challenge and guide these youth to develop greater responsibility, discipline, perseverance, and goal-setting skills as they train for progressively longer distance races. They meet with coaches at least twice weekly at their home schools and on weekends as a larger community with their individual mentors. Mentors and mentees have regular contact throughout the week, and at least once monthly outside of practice for more social activities.
Between coaches and mentors who serve as strong, positive role models, and peers working towards similar goals, Teens Run DC creates a thoughtful and supportive community fostering a sense of belonging for all participants, making the journey easier and more fun - whether training for a 5K race or a half marathon, attempting to lose 5 pounds or trying to find a healthier lifestyle."We want our youth to recognize that who they are is worth valuing."
