VOLUNTEER WITH UHURU FOODS AT MAKER FAIRE!
Uhuru Foods & Pies needs volunteers to come help out at Maker Faire by working in our food booth where we will be preparing, grilling and selling our delicious African comfort food such as jerk chicken, jamaica juice, fried plantains, and sweet potato pie!
Uhuru Foods & Pies is one of the economic institutions of Black Star Industries and it is about putting the means to grow, produce and distribute fresh food into the hands of African people. The vision of Uhuru Foods & Pies includes the goal for Africans to control their own land, farms, trucking, baking, cooking and distribution of food, none of which African people are currently able to carry out on a large scale inside the U.S., Africa or anywhere in the world today.
Here are the dates and shifts for volunteering in our food tent:- - SATURDAY, MAY 18 from 8:30m - 2:00pm

- Please go to this website: Transportation and Parking Info Maker Faire
- Also, if you come for a morning shift, there is plenty of free parking around the event center.
Is the event free for volunteers?
- Yes, the event is free for Uhuru food booth volunteers! But, we cannot issue out the free passes before the event, so we have to meet you at GATE 9 in order to get you in.
What will I be doing?
- You could be doing a number of things such as cooking, prepping, and/or selling food in a food booth. There are 10 people in the food booth at all times.
- We will match you with your skills and we train you on the spot.
- There’s no experience necessary and we will train you on-site.
- Clothing that's okay to work in and could get food on -- we do have aprons. Long pants/jeans, tee-shirts and sneakers or work-shoes are best.
- Comfortable, closed toe shoes with grippy soles (NO flip flops or sandals)
- A cap or visor. We have extra caps/visors if you do not have one. Red or black preferred.
- Bring hair ties, clips or other ways to make sure all your hair is tied up and put back, without falling out. This is important for food service work!
- Yes, for a shift of 5 hours or more, you will get a free meal of what we are selling (African comfort food: Jerk Chicken sandwiches, vegan lentil stew patties, vegan burgers, vegan jerk chicken, plantains, garlic fries, and water)
- If you come to the early shift, you can stay afterwards and walk around, or if you have an afternoon shift, you can come early to the faire before you start.
- If you need to document any hours, bring a form and one of the coordinators will sign it for you. Any other documentation you will need from us, please let us know.
