WHO WE ARE

In Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington, as in the rest of the country, the number of unwanted horses and horses not receiving proper basic care exceeds the resources available to accommodate them. Though there are currently no accurate figures on how many of these horses exist, our research and work with regional animal control officers tells us these numbers are on the rise.

Sound Equine Options utilizes a vast network of participants to strengthen the safety net for local horses to provide them with a life of dignity, love, trust, and care. Our volunteers are passionate about the veterinary-based programs and the results they produce. Based on innovative practices, these programs address the need for temporary assistance and the unwanted horse issue on a national level while radically changing the lives of local horses.

Mission Statement

Saving Horses Through Support, Education, Rehabilitation & Training.

Description

Sound Equine Options (SEO) is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization under IRS Code section 501(c)(3).

SEO was founded in 2009 by Columbia Equine Hospital's veterinarian Dr. Scott Hansen, and practice manager and veterinary technician Kim Mosiman, seeking to address the plight of horses whose owners could not afford to provide them with basic care, resulting in large-scale neglect and abandonment.

Staffed and run by a large network of volunteers from our local community, SEO exists solely on private donations, small grants and fundraising. SEO does not own its own facility. Instead, it depends on a huge network of foster homes to take in our our rescued and owner surrender horses that come to us from many different situations.

SEO estimates the cost of veterinary care and rehabilitation, along with the cost of the training needed to ensure horses are adoptable, to be approximately $2,000 per horse.
