Benefactor for Bates celebrates the legacy of Pearl Nelson Bates and raises funds for the scholarship program created in her honor. Pearl was a dedicated community leader and enthusiastic YWCA volunteer. When she died unexpectedly in 1963 following surgery, ETS colleagues sent a donation in her memory to the YWCA to be used for children’s camp. Sherman Bates, Pearl’s husband, recalled that, although she had no children of her own, "Pearl considered everybody to be her child." By 1965, following group and individual contributions, the YWCA Board of Directors formally designated the Pearl Bates Scholarship Fund. Now in its fifty-second year, the Pearl Bates Scholarship Fund has helped hundreds of families access all the programs and services offered at the YWCA and has awarded over two million dollars in scholarships. Friends of the YWCA are partnering with ETS to honor Pearl Bates’ legacy, highlighting the programs and services her Scholarship Fund gives access to for community families who would otherwise be unable to afford. Special thanks to ETS and PNC Wealth Management for making our inaugural event possible.

Each year, YWCA hosts its Benefactor for Bates.

Mission Statement

YWCA Princeton is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women.

Description

The mission of the YWCA Princeton is to eliminate racism and empower women. Everything we do is intended to be true to this purpose.

More than 5,000 members take advantage of our programs and services: from child care, after-school care, and summer camps to dance, art and crafts and book clubs; from educational lectures and seminars to aquatics, martial arts and wellness classes.

Our mission to eliminate racism is highlighted by our English as a Second Language program and our multi-lingual nursery school, as well as our annual "Stand Against Racism," which has been replicated by YWCAs across the country.

Our mission to empower women is the hallmark of our Breast Cancer Resource Center, which provides help, hope and ongoing support for breast cancer survivors, and their families and caregivers.

Every day, we encourage women and girls to become volunteers, mentors, thinkers, and leaders. As we put our mission into action, the Friends of the YWCA lead the charge to allocate eighty-five cents of every dollar we raise to the women and families of our communities.
