ORGANIZATION: AIDS Outreach Center

  • 7 people are interested

The Sandy Lanier Nutrition Center at AIDS Outreach Center is a resource for people living with HIV to access healthy foods and nutrition counseling. The food pantry is open Monday and Tuesday from 12 pm until 6 pm and Wednesday from 8 am until 6 pm.

The typical volunteer shift is three hours long and requires extended standing and moving. Volunteers check clients in, help them shop and understand nutrition guidelines, bag groceries, and carry groceries to client cars with a smile on their face and courtesy in their words.

Volunteers who can commit to fulfilling at least one shift per week on a regular basis are preferred and greatly appreciated!

HOW TO APPLY

AOC offers two volunteer orientation sessions. Individuals interested in volunteering with AOC can come to a morning orientation at 9:30 am on the first Wednesday of the month or to an afternoon orientation at 3:30 pm on the third Wednesday of the month. The program lasts an hour and a half and is intended to provide an understanding of the barriers our neighbors living with HIV face, what AOC does to help them overcome those barriers, and the history of HIV/AIDS as it relates to AOC. It also covers, in detail, the various volunteer opportunities available (listed briefly below).

During the last thirty minutes of the orientation, interested individuals will complete a paper application, a brief face-to-face interview, and a background check. AOC’s ability to place volunteers in an ongoing position will depend on the needs and availability of the agency at the time. Volunteer opportunities at AOC may not be ideal for someone seeking to complete numerous community service hours within a brief period of time.

If you would like to RSVP for the next volunteer orientation session, please email volunteer@aoc.org.

Mission Statement

AIDS Outreach Center (AOC) is the leading organization in Tarrant and seven surrounding rural counties serving men, women and children with HIV and their families, educating the public about HIV prevention, and advocating for sound HIV public policy.

Description

In 1984, just three years after HIV was identified as the cause of AIDS, AIDS Outreach Center (AOC) was born out of the need to help those locally dealing with the life threatening illness. In the beginning, AOC was an all-volunteer organization made up of friends and family dedicated to comforting those dying from the disease and those working to combat the stigma of HIV/AIDS. With the advancement in medications in 1996, the mission and focus of the organization changed from end-of-life services to sustainability, manageability, and long-term care. As the landscape of the HIV/AIDS pandemic shifted to the management of a chronic illness, the need for services and types of services evolved. Today, with more than 30 employees, 300 dedicated volunteers and 1,600 clients from all races, genders, ages, and sexual identities, AOC operates numerous programs and teams aimed at preventing the spread of HIV through education and testing, introducing those newly diagnosed to medical treatment, and improving the quality of life for long-term survivors and their families. Our services include prevention, outreach, counseling, a nutrition center, nutritional counseling, a dental clinic, case management, health insurance assistance, transportation assistance, and youth programs.
