Position: Food and Nutrition Intern

Hours: 10-15 hours per week. Flexible days/hours. 3-4 month commitment. Can extend to 6 upon request.

This position may be used to fulfill academic requirements or community service hours.

Agency Summary:

CAPI USA has been working with immigrant, refugee and low-income communities since 1982 and serves about 3,500 participants annually. CAPI’s mission is to guide individuals in their journey toward self-determination and social equality. CAPI began as a food shelf, and continues to serve several hundred families per month. Each summer, CAPI hosts Produce Distributions, providing fresh produce to the community. CAPI’s Community Gardens began in 2012 and continue to serve Hmong growers in the Twin Cities.

Position Summary:

The Food and Nutrition Intern will support the Food and Nutrition programs through programming, and facilitating donations to CAPI’s food shelf from the Community Gardens. They will also help run the bi-weekly Produce Distributions, and evaluate the outreach used to promote the events. Other tasks may include volunteer recruitment and management, data collection, and building partnerships with local organizations and businesses. Additionally, they may do some research into opportunities to build capacity and improve the Community Gardens program through social enterprise models. Interns will gain experience working a non-profit setting, and will develop skills for working cross-culturally and across organizations.

Preferred education and experience:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree
  • Familiar with Hunger Relief work, Nutrition, Community Gardens, or similar fields.
  • Hmong language skills a strong plus, but not required

Preferred skills, qualifications, and abilities:

  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality
  • Good time management, strong communication, and leadership skills
  • Must complete HIPAA training and stay in compliance with data privacy laws
