The Volunteer Domestic Violence Court Advocates for Abuser Accountability (VDVCAA) are advocates who ensure that defendants remanded to court-mandated programs have resources and materials about Pathways to Changes North Carolina (NC) Council for Women (Domestic Violence Commission) Certified Batter Intervention Program (and other services) to comply with such orders. The VDVCAA are trained to work in partnership with victim advocates to ultimately protect the safety of victims and hold abusers accountable for their actions by facilitating the process of immediate enrollment into programs that re-educate abusers about their cognitive behavior. The VDVCAA will attend Domestic Violence Court in Chatham, Durham and Orange Counties, communities served by Pathways to Change, to inform judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and other court personnel about the availability of Pathway services in each of these communities as meaningful alternatives to sentencing and a method to ensure quick judicial action and improve defendant compliance with court orders. Pathways VDVCA Advocates will work collaboratively with victim advocates from local domestic violence agencies such as the Compass Center (Orange County), Durham Crisis Response Center (Durham County) and the Family Violence and Rape Crisis Service Center (Chatham County), each of which operates under formal memorandums of understandings with Pathways, to improve collaboration, appropriate referrals between agencies and other partners, and ensure that the appropriate monitoring information is collected to ensure victim safety and report on abuser compliance and progress while registered in Pathways to Change Programs.


Responsibilities:

  • Attend Domestic Violence Court in Orange, Durham, or Chatham Counties along with other agencies, such as local domestic violence agencies, as a representative and ambassador for Pathways to Change.
  • Acquaint judges, prosecutors, defenders and other court personnel about Pathways to Changes NC Council for Women (Domestic Violence Commission) certified 26-week Partner Abuse Intervention Program and other services by distributing print material and other relevant material.
  • Remain attentive during DV court proceedings to expeditiously reach out to defendants and their respective attorneys to ensure immediate compliance with court orders and facilitate process of the appropriate enrollment.
  • Work collaboratively with victim advocates, the courtroom and others to determine best approaches to court decision and effectively collaborate to ultimately ensure victim safety and promote defendant accountability with court-ordered mandates.
  • Completes and submits referral forms to Pathways main office and/or schedules intake appointments.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements: Must be a self-starter with strong interpersonal skills, assertive, yet not pushy, with an ability to work with a wide range of people from varying backgrounds and socio-economic status. Prior experience with domestic violence or social services highly desirable but willing to train through Pathways Court Advocacy Program. College degree preferred but not required. Pathways to Change is a non-profit agency dedicated to enhancing public safety and quality of life by providing a variety of services to court-involved individuals and others desiring to address maladaptive or harmful patterns of behavior. Services are provided in an environment of respect, support, and accountability. The organization boasts more than 24 years of providing services to the Orange, Chatham and Durham Counties. Working since 1993 under several different names, most recently known as Behavioral Insights, the agency has built a solid reputation for providing a variety of high-quality services, primarily to those involved with the criminal justice system. Pathways works collaboratively with many organizations and task forces in the Durham, Orange, and Chatham County communities, maintaining active Memoranda of Understandings with the victim service agencies in all three communities and participates regularly on several task forces and committees that work toward goals similar to those of Pathways to Change.
