Since 1965, over 220,000 AmeriCorps VISTA Members have served in all 50 states. The VISTA mission is to strengthen organizations that alleviate poverty through **indirect service** and **capacity building**.

Mid City Redevelopment Alliance's VISTA Members work with organizations across Baton Rouge to:

  • Launch programs to empower mothers and fathers to be active parents
  • Organize after school mentoring and training for at-risk youth
  • Assist flood survivors in disaster recovery
  • Support Gov. John Bel Edward efforts to fight human trafficking
  • Facilitate violence prevention and victims assistance programs
  • Fundraising, grant writing and volunteer recruitment for coastal restoration efforts
  • Develop teacher training programs to better serve the entire state
  • Work behind the scenes with advocacy organizations to take a big picture look at impact
  • Improve financial literacy

In addition to a modest living stipend, AmeriCorps VISTA Members serve full time for a year and receive the following benefits:

  • 10 vacation days and 10 sick days in addition to federal holidays
  • Health care benefits, child care benefits, and transportation assistance
  • Loan deferment and all interest accrued during your service year will be payed by the program
  • Education award of $5,920 in addition to deferment assistance to help pay down loans or future tuition costs
  • Relocation Assistance to Baton Rouge area
  • Non-competitive eligibility status for government employment
  • Weekly professional development
  • Telecommuting two days a month

Mid City Redevelopment Alliance (MCRA) was founded in 1991 by General Health System, parent company to the Baton Rouge General Medical Center. MCRA is a chartered member of the NeighborWorks America network of excellence. The organization has four lines of business: 1) Home Ownership promotion, 2) Homeownership Preservation Services, 3) Community Building & Engagement, and 4) Real Pstate Development & Asset Management)
