GENERAL SUMMARY

The Program Assistant intern will observe and participate in all aspects of executing the KEEP Healthy program. This includes identifying locations, working with community partners, marketing the event, and day of event implementation.

KEEP Healthy is the National Kidney Foundation’s community-based educational initiative to raise awareness about the risk factors for kidney disease, and steps to take to keep the kidneys healthy and reduce risk. The program screens individuals for risk factors of chronic kidney disease, including high blood pressure, high BMI, and proteinuria; educates individuals on their risk, and encourages those with multiple risk factors to get tested.

In addition, the Program Assistant intern will assist with NKF’s community outreach initiative. In this capacity the intern will assist with direct education to community members about risk factors for CKD, kidney donation and transplant, and NKF resources at various health fairs and community events.

Lastly, the intern will assist with preparations for inaugural Advocacy Day at the Minnesota State Capitol planned for spring 2019.

Intern may assist with other program activity projects as assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Observe and participate in all aspects of planning, executing, budgeting, and staffing for KEEP events
  • Learn strategies of securing funding for programs through soliciting in kind donations, and assisting with grant writing.
  • Participate in discussions with community partners to maintain and cultivate new relationships for program implementation
  • Represent NKF at community events and provide information about CKD to community members attending this events.
  • Under the guidance of the program manager develop community outreach messages and activities.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the Twin Cities to attend KEEP healthy screenings and community outreach events as needed.
  • Learn internal and external program communications strategies including, but not limited to: marketing materials, press releases, op/ed pieces, and brochures.
  • Performs additional duties as required. Potential additional duties may include data collection and program evaluation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • College degree from an accredited college or university
  • Current Masters in Public Health student
  • Community outreach and health education experience or coursework preferred
  • Program evaluation experience or coursework preferred
  • Excellent word processing skills, computer literate on Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent telephone etiquette and professional manner
  • Excellent interpersonal, time-management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to set priorities, multi-task and work independently, without close supervision
  • Professional demeanor, adherence to the rules of confidentiality and an ethic of respect for patients and volunteers

WORKING CONDITIONS, EQUIPMENT USED AND SPECIAL INFORMATION

Flexible schedule, 10-15 hours per week desired, position may require some evening and weekend work. Must have unimpeachable integrity and trustworthiness while possessing a high degree of tact, discretion and professionalism. Maintains effectiveness under pressure. Verbal and written communication skills will be used on a daily basis. Competency in use of a multiple-line telephone, personal computer, fax machine, photocopier and other standard office equipment.
