Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) would not exist today without the expertise, time, and enthusiasm of its volunteers. They are on the sports field guiding the athletes through drills. They are behind the scenes ensuring events run properly. And they are giving and receiving more high fives and hugs than they can count. Marketing & Social Media Bloggers/Writers are the storytellers of SOSC. They use their background in journalism, reporting, and writing to promote SOSC Athletes - their stories, their accomplishments is what grows the organization’s athlete and supporter base. See your name on published stories, further your writing portfolio, be the storyteller SOSC needs!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce assigned articles for use by SOSC on media channels, including SOSC.org, WeAreSOSC.org, social media on media releases sent to mainstream media outlets
  • Interview athletes, families, volunteers and other individuals associated with SOSC to tell positive and uplifting features of inclusion, joy, and sport

TRAINING & SUPPORT

  • Weekly staff support on prioritization of work
  • Receive basic guide on telling the SOSC story
  • Review process of produced work

COMMITMENT

  • Preferred commitment of six months or more
  • Weekly schedule is flexible
  • This is a virtual volunteer opportunity - work is done in the field or from home

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 18 years of age with valid ID
  • Must have experience in conducting interviews
  • Background in journalism, reporting (onscreen or off) - writing is required
  • Familiarity with AP style writing
  • Must be able to meet deadlines (however, deadlines will be set to work around volunteer schedule)
  • Must have superior customer service skills
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must submit an online volunteer application that will include a background check and required training - recertification required every 3 years
  • Must submit writing sample and resume as part of application process
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from worksite and event locations
