Volunteer to make a difference in Maryland and help to end hunger in your state! Maryland Hunger Solutions is a non-profit organization that works to end hunger by increasing access to all of the federal nutrition programs through a combination of advocacy, education, outreach, and collaboration.

Organizational Background
FRAC is the leading national nonprofit organization working to eradicate poverty-related hunger and undernutrition in the United States. FRAC engages in research, technical assistance, information dissemination, policy analysis and advocacy, coalition-building, and an array of communications strategies. FRAC works in partnership with hundreds of national, state and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations and labor organizations to address hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.

Formed in 2007, Maryland Hunger Solutions (MDHS) is the leading Maryland non-profit working to reduce hunger and improve nutrition in the State of Maryland by improving participation and benefits in public nutrition and related programs. MDHS’s focus is on using federal programs (e.g., food stamps, called the Food Supplement Program in Maryland, school breakfast and lunch, summer and afterschool nutrition programs, WIC and other programs) to reduce hunger and its adverse effects; to improve economic security, health and nutrition; and to strengthen community institutions.

Responsibilities
As a special events volunteer, you will help occasionally with Maryland Hunger Solutions events or activities. Events may include but are not limited to:
* Hear the Maryland Crunch
* The SNAP Challenge
* Annual MFANN (Maryland Food Access and Nutrition Network) Conference
* Community Outreach events

You may be needed before, during, or after the event to assist with staffing during the event, event preparation, and follow-up tasks. This position is unpaid, but you will be reimbursed for travel expenses. As a volunteer, you are an extension of our organization. We primarily work with low-income clients and, expect volunteers to treat clients with dignity and respect.

Required skills
* You must have your own transportation and a willingness to drive to different locations in Maryland
* You should be comfortable working with people from a variety of backgrounds
* Excellent communication and writing skills

Preferred
* Foreign language skills (reading, writing, and conversational)
* Flexible schedule
* Experience working with low-income clients or with a non-profit organization
* Experience with event planning and management

Mission Statement

Maryland Hunger Solutions uses a three-pronged strategy to overcome barriers and create self-sustaining connections between Maryland residents and nutritious foods. Maryland Hunger Solutions works with state and community partners to seek to: Maximize participation in all federal nutrition programs through a combination of removal of obstacles to participation, close work with social service agencies and outreach. Educate the public and key stakeholders both to the stark reality of hunger’s existence in Maryland and to solutions that are already at hand. Improve public policies to end hunger, reduce poverty, and promote nutrition.

Description

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) established Maryland Hunger Solutions (MDHS) as a project to fight hunger and improve the nutrition, health, and well-being of children and families in Maryland. The initiative was launched in the fall of 2007 and is modeled on the successful D.C. Hunger Solutions (DCHS) Initiative that began in 2002.
