The Museum of African American History is New England’s largest museum dedicated to preserving, conserving and interpreting the contributions of African Americans. In Boston and Nantucket, the Museum has preserved four historic sites and two Black Heritage Trails(r) that tell the story of organized black communities from the Colonial Period through the 19th century.

Work will consist of assisting park rangers and Museum staff to host the "Third Thursday Throwback" evening activities on the Museum grounds. Specific duties include greeting visitors and providing direction; ringing up sales, and giving and taking tickets; coat and hat check; assisting with light food preparation; assisting with event set up and clean up; act as an usher during movie or concert events; answering questions from the public and providing verbal and printed information as needed; and alerting rangers and Museum staff of any visitor service needs or issues that may arise.

Previous experience is not required, but prior customer service training is helpful. Willingness to work as part of a team is essential. Volunteers should enjoy working with the public, and be able to keep their composure in busy and distracting situations. Volunteers must be able to commit to at least one Thursday evening event throughout the season. Must be willing to learn about the Museum and exhibits as well as other nearby attractions. Attendance at one park-held training session is required, additional training will be provided at worksite.

The work is performed at the Museum. Volunteers should be able to stand or sit for extended periods, and be able to lift up to 20 lbs. Some evening events may take place out of doors in the Museum courtyard area. Interactions with visitors will be dynamic.

A minimum commitment of one evening event (May-September) is required. Completion of one Museum led training session is required, date and time to be announced. Volunteers are needed on the third Thursday May through September from 4:30 to 8 pm.
