ORGANIZATION: FREE GEEK TWIN CITIES

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 10 people are interested

We have an opportunity for a group of people (can be a group of employees, class of students, etc) to come volunteer and each group member can choose to:

* Take apart some electronic components - some groups prefer to work together on one large item, such as a large printer or old industrial computer; some groups prefer to work on individual tasks
* Learn how to refurbish a computer - this includes learning computer components, testing of components and installing Linux operating system

The event will start with a short orientation where staff will give a short intro to how the recycling / refurbishing process works in Free Geek and will give a tour of entire facility. Free Geek staff will be there to guide the group in the tasks they choose to do.

Available time is generally Wednesday through Sunday, Noon to 5 pm. During busy times of the year we recommend setting up time on Thursday or Friday since these days are reserved for group volunteering or internal work.

In the past we've had groups of employees setting up such an event as an outing or to take advantage of company allocated volunteering time. We also had schools and colleges setting up event to give the students opportunity to learn more about computer hardware and to introduce the students to the concept of responsible recycling. The feedback we always get is that people had a lot of fun and learned at the same time!

Please, contact us if you are interested in setting up time for such a group event.

Mission Statement

Free Geek Twin Cities (FGTC) is dedicated to addressing the following issues though direct, local, community-driven action: The Digital Divide There are still many people in our community that do not have access to computers and the Internet. There are many reasons for this gap in our population, but one of our main goals is alleviate this problem through work and education. Volunteers work in programs where they gain skills on how to use, build, and understand computers, and in the process earn a free computer. Electronic Waste (eWaste) With the rapid growth of technology, our community has created large quantities of electronic waste. FGTC accepts this waste and its first goal is to reuse this material and refurbish it into a new computer to give to volunteers or to sell in our thrift store. It is not always possible to reuse all the materials we get, so we are dedicated to recycling those materials in a way that is both environmentally and socially friendly.
