Give love to some rescue dogs & walk, wash, and play with them at our shelter! There are tons of pups (big & small) who'd love attention as they wait for their forever homes. We only require a one hour / week commitment for this opportunity for at least two months (that's only 8 hours!), but if you can come every day that would be wonderful!

If you are looking to do this opportunity on a short term basis (for project/school hours or if you're unavailable for longer), please contact us anyways since we have temporary caretaker positions for the dogs as well. However, please let us know that you can only do short term. You would perform the same duties, but we'll make sure to assign you dogs based on your availability.

HOW IT WORKS
During your orientation, you will be assigned 1-2 kennels (depending on your availability) to be an advocate for. This means that you'll be responsible for giving the dog(s) in those kennels lots of love and attention whenever you come in & try to complete as many duties as possible (listed below). Each kennel houses from 1-3 dogs, and you may choose the temperament/size you work best with. The dogs will sometimes get rotated every few weeks after getting adopted, but there are some long-time residents who are patiently waiting for their homes. All supplies are provided! You will also be responsible for periodically checking our adoptable pet list at www.tinyurl.com/VIDApets to learn the names of the dogs that might get rotated into your kennels. You'll need to help us update their kennel cards every so often by writing the names of the new dogs, since sometimes, we're too busy to change them!

Duties: walking, bathing (if needed, it's getting hot and sticky out!), brushing, changing bedding, laundry, changing water, picking up waste if needed, giving treats & toys, playing, & taking photos for social media (phone photos are great!)

After you have completed an orientation and get the hang of things, you may come in to volunteer at any time from 7 AM - 7:30 PM (earlier / later is ok). Someone will almost always be at the shelter, but we can't guarantee that someone will always be there to assist you. This means that during your orientation and the first few times you come, make sure to ask lots of questions and maybe even take a few notes!

BENEFITS OF THIS OPPORTUNITY:
You will be providing a dog that may have never received love and care in his/her entire life with all the love you could possibly give. You'll be able to create strong bonds with these dogs until they find their forever homes as well and have a fun and fulfilling experience yourself. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has a little time to spare per week and absolutely loves spending time with pups.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to protect and help dogs and cats from homelessness neglect, abuse, cruelty and abandonment. VIDA does not belong to any one person but instead to all of its volunteers. We adopt out about 50-60 cats and dogs per month - we rescue dogs from high-kill shelters, low income neighborhoods, and from the streets of Mexico. We also have spay and neuter operations and have saved thousands of animals already. www.vida4animals.org www.instagram.com/vidarescue www.facebook.com/vidarescue

Description

Volunteers in Defense of Animals is a non-profit organization working to end the suffering and mistreatment of dogs and cats in Southern California. We bring spay and neuter services to areas where families cannot afford them; we facilitate the rescue, foster care, and adoption of animals whenever possible, and we offer education and support to those involved in the care of animals.

We have found forever homes for hundreds of dogs and cats, with around 4-5 new adoptions taking place each week. Many of our dogs come from local high-kill shelters before they are euthanized and on the streets of both the US and Mexico. We also have spay/neuter operations in low-income neighborhoods in the US and in Mexico and have spayed/neutered thousands of pets.
