Awakenings is recruiting fresh and diverse voices for our growing Associate Board. New members will help the board to further our mission to make visible the artistic expression of survivors of sexual violence.
About Awakenings:
Awakenings began in 2010. In the beginning, the gallery space was dedicated to the ever-growing permanent collection of artwork by individual survivors. At its formal opening in the Fall of 2010 as Awakenings Foundation, we included our first performance offerings of readings by survivors. Over the next few years, gallery performances included poetry readings, workshops, and panel discussions. As the number and types of art featured at the gallery continued to grow, space has been created for the inclusion of individual art exhibitions.
Currently, Awakenings publishes a literary magazine and blog, and hosts concerts, dance performances, rotating art exhibits, and additional events which showcase the artistic stories of survivors of sexual violence.
The Associate Board is a largely self-governed group of passionate individuals. We are a fundraising and advocacy board responsible for hosting two fundraising events per year. Associate Board members are also expected to serve as Ambassadors of the organization and convey the continued healing we believe artistic expression brings survivors.
If you are interested in joining our Board, please send your resume and a short paragraph sharing why you are interested in serving the organization and what makes you a good fit to Awakenings Recruitment Officer, Cate Hensley at cate@awakeningsart.org. We are accepting applications up until August 1, 2019.

Mission Statement
Awakenings makes visible the artistic expression of survivors of sexual violence.
Description
The Awakenings Foundation is a certified 501-c3 dedicated to making visible the artistic expression of survivors of sexual violence. We have a small gallery space in Ravenswood with the only known collection of survivor art. We hold a wide variety of year round programming that includes rotating art exhibits, monthly art making nights, musical concerts, dance and theater performances, poetry readings and open mic nights, live painting events, and much more. We also publish an online literary magazine twice a year, and hold writing workshops to help survivors heal through literary arts. We partner with rape crisis centers, counselors, art therapists, local activists, and like-minded nonprofits to collaborate on events and share our audiences. We are growing rapidly and want to spread the word, expand our community, and widen the resources we are able to offer survivors.
