ABOUT
Women In Comedy is a 501(c) (3) non profit for women in the comedy industry operating on 100% volunteer efforts and donations for everything they do. With no operating budget and a lot of passion - this non profit has already been able to launch 4 Women In Comedy chapter cities in NY, LA, Chicago, and DC (and growing). We have successfully implemented dozens of free events to bring hundreds of women together in safe spaces on a shoestring budget, they formed a comedy coalition to end harassment and assault in our comedy spaces, and the work we have been doing to empower, connect, and advocate for women and girls in comedy has been featured in The Washington Post , ELLE Magazine , NY Magazine , The Samantha Bee Show, The Chicago Tribune, Jezebel, Buzzfeed, and more. We even had Maria Bamford donate time as a surprise guest to perform at one of their most recent events in Los Angeles!
We are seeking volunteer crews for Women In Comedy’s first ever WiCo program - a women in comedy accelerator and cohort at 2112 that will become an annual effort to empower women with resources to produce their comedic shorts/pilot scripts. This program aims to create economic impact as we teach the selected 12 projects the art of melding comedy chops with entrepreneurship. Through 6 months of workshops, support, and community, the organization is aiding 12 women's projects in creating a short film utilizing limited resources, and teaching them the marketing skills to get their content out to the world.
In case you hadn't heard - gender parity in comedy is startlingly off - for example only 18% of writers in late night TV are women. .. and only 4% of funny women in late night are women of color! We find that a bit odd considering all the diverse and funny women we know.
WiCo projects seeking DP's, Editors, Audio, and Light experts with their own equipment to volunteer on upcoming unpaid production roles for comedic short films to help get more women's voices out into the festival and network circuit. Email wico@womenincomedy.org with your resume if interested in joining us for this journey.
