ORGANIZATION: LA WORKS RSVP

LAWORK_RSVP

Bet Tzedek, The House of Justice, provides free legal assistance to thousands of people who would otherwise be denied access to the legal system underpinning our democracy. Founded in 1974 by a few individuals seeking to act upon a central tenet of Jewish law and tradition "Tzedek, tzedek, tirdof - Justice, justice you shall pursue," Bet Tzedek provides legal assistance to residents of Los Angeles County, regardless of their racial, religious, or ethnic background. Bet Tzedek’s mission, therefore, is "To pursue equal justice for all."

Program Description:

Bet Tzedek’s Intake Services volunteers conduct pre-screening assessments in order to determine the appropriate course of action for individuals who call seeking legal assistance. Our volunteers are often the first contact our community has with our organization, and we rely on our volunteers to handle a high volume of calls from a diverse population of individuals with a broad range of needs.

Gain Issue Spotting and Client Interview Experience: Under attorney supervision, volunteers develop foundational legal skills, including learning to spot legal issues; to conduct telephone interviews with potential clients dealing with challenging, stressful situations; determining what information provided by the caller is relevant, and to hone judgment of potential cases in a wide array of legal areas. Volunteering with Intake Services also provides first-hand knowledge of the landscape of legal services available in Los Angeles County and exposure to an understanding of the issues faced by the communities we serve.

Time Commitment: The Intake Call Center is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am- 5:00 pm. We ask that volunteers commit to 8-10 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks. All volunteer opportunities at Bet Tzedek are filled on a rolling basis.

Requirements:
Training and interview required.
