Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a classroom coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This workshop needs your help in downtown Manhattan, NYC. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code and time slot(s) you choose. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program DL11AW-L

Date: Tuesday, May 1st
Time (choose one or both slots): 9:30 - 10:30 AM and/or 1:15 - 2:00 PM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the program: Two classes of 11th- and 12th-graders read The Submission by Amy Waldman, a novel about the blind-jury selection of a 9/11 memorial design that triggers controversy when the winning entry is revealed. Using classification-the organization of groups and subgroups based on similarities-students will outline their reasons and provide evidence to support their arguments for or against the Muslim-American winner designing the memorial. Writing coaches will help them polish their opinion pieces.
