"First Friends" provide assistance to refugee families or individuals new to the United States as a cultural guide and friend. They visit refugee clients during the first 3-6 months in the US to check on their progress, to answer questions, and help with the adjustment process. Volunteers help provide refugees with important access to the community by teaching them how to shop for groceries and other needed items, how to use public transportation, how to access public libraries, parks and community programs. Volunteers may also choose to focus on adult ESL or employment mentoring.

utheran Services of Georgia brings hope, healing, and strength to people in need, regardless of religion, race, ability, gender or sexual orientation. LSG has provided services ranging from adoption, foster care and family support services, to refugee assistance, disaster response disability support for adults, and after school programs.
Through combining the resources of staff, financial donors, various governmental agencies, volunteers, and Lutheran congregations, LSG is able to bring quality programs and services to the people of Georgia. There are volunteer opportunities in the surrounding areas of Atlanta, Albany, Athens, Augusta, Columbus, Rome and Savannah.
