The primary roles of the Volunteer Receptionist are to ensure that guests, students, and tutors are welcomed positively, and to execute all necessary administrative tasks to the highest quality standards.
The Receptionist is the welcoming face of the Brunner Literacy Center. A strong customer service orientation is essential in this role, both in person and on the telephone. A calm, organized approach will put visitors at ease and provide them with the assistance they need. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy are required.
Details about responsibilities:
- Receiving Guests
- Greet students, tutors, and other guests with a customer service focus
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the Center
- Assist students or volunteers with signing in or out on the computer
- Give each student an orange raffle ticket on arrival (to write name and put in can for weekly drawing)
- Maintain records of student-tutor appointments; maintain daily calendars; remind tutors to complete blue scheduling slip to indicate next tutoring session
- Phone Duties
- Make appointment reminder calls to students; follow up with tutors if needed
- Answer phones, convey messages accurately, and respond or direct as needed
- Transfer calls ("Transfer" --> Extension --> Hang up)
- Take and deliver phone messages
- Additional Tasks
- Accept books and other donations; complete In-Kind Donation slip
- Shelve magazines, textbooks, etc. as needed
- Make copies of forms and materials as needed
- Assist in preparation of binders and folders for new students and/or tutors
- Deliver U.S. mail to appropriate staff (or internal mailboxes)
- Prepare periodic mailings
- Perform various light housekeeping and hospitality tasks as needed
- Other tasks as requested by appropriate staff members

Description
The Brunner Literacy Center provides tutoring in reading, writing, and math to adult learners over the age of 19 who want to achieve personal and professional goals, including:
- Gaining a better job or a job promotion;
- Helping their children with homework and/or other life skills;
- Reading medical information correctly in order to avoid serious mistakes such as wrong dosages;
- Being able to read news stories in order to discuss current events, sports, entertainment, and local issues;
- Completing forms, various applications, questionnaires, and other documents.
Tutoring and other services, including books and materials, are provided without charge.
