Our tutors are:

  • Dedicated people who enjoy sharing their gifts and knowledge
  • Compassionate individuals who understand others’ needs
  • Respectful partners who are willing to be flexible in their tutoring methods and plans for meeting their students' educational goals

After new students are assessed and assigned a specific skill level, tutors are matched with students according to their area(s) of expertise and availability. Tutors initially instruct students at their beginning level, and then progress to the next skill levels as their students become more proficient. Tutors also help students set goals for their learning, with the help of the Program Manager or Site Coordinator.

Volunteer tutors at the Day Reporting Center (DRC) have the opportunity to work with students on-site from 8:30-12:00, Monday-Thursday.

The DRC operates within the Bennett J. Cooper Reentry facility, in conjunction with Montgomery County Courts, and serves residents and community members. Residents are people who have been incarcerated for low-level offenses for 30-90 days. Community members are people who regularly visit the Reentry Center to meet with parole officers, complete drug testing, and work with other area agencies like the BLC who provide on-site services in the DRC.

Tutoring adult students at the Day Reporting Center is a powerful, practical way to help people gain the skills and confidence they need to make better choices, find gainful employment, and develop greater stability in life. Volunteer tutors at the DRC must be comfortable working in a prison environment.

Mission Statement

The Brunner Literacy Center is a welcoming place for adults to reach their educational dreams.

Description

The Brunner Literacy Center provides tutoring in reading, writing, and math to adult learners over the age of 19 who want to achieve personal and professional goals, including:

  • Gaining a better job or a job promotion;
  • Helping their children with homework and/or other life skills;
  • Reading medical information correctly in order to avoid serious mistakes such as wrong dosages;
  • Being able to read news stories in order to discuss current events, sports, entertainment, and local issues;
  • Completing forms, various applications, questionnaires, and other documents.
The Brunner Literacy Center was established in 2011 by two Sisters of the Precious Blood congregation, founded by Maria Anna Brunner for whom the Center is named. The BLC relies heavily on the generous donations of corporations, foundations, and private individuals. With this support, staff and volunteers fulfill the Center's mission of helping adults learn to read, write, compute, and speak English.

Tutoring and other services, including books and materials, are provided without charge.
