The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is a not-for-profit legal services organization founded in 1990. NYLAG uses the power of the law to help New Yorkers in need combat social and economic injustice. We address emerging and urgent legal needs with comprehensive, free civil legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community education. In addition to a staff of more than 250 dedicated lawyers, paralegals and support personnel, we collaborate with community organizations and engage pro bono attorneys and volunteers to serve a greater number of people with unmet civil legal needs.
NYLAG’s Shelter Advocacy Initiative (SAI) provides a comprehensive array of legal services designed to help people without homes access NYC Department of Homeless Services. Each year, tens of thousands of homeless adults and families are denied emergency shelter by the NYC Department of Homeless Services for reasons that are often complex and difficult to understand. SAI provides advice, advocacy, and representation during the shelter intake and appeal processes to help clients gain access to emergency shelter and, once in shelter, ensure they receive the services they need
NYLAG’s SAI is seeking five dedicated volunteers to assist in packing care kits for women in shelters. On April 24 th from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. at our office located in the financial district we will be packing the care kits which will contain the essentials requested by women in shelters. We are hoping your caring hands will join us in our efforts!
Please email volunteer@nylag.org with "SAI" in the subject line to indicate interest. Volunteers will be confirmed Monday, 4/23.
