Cooking Matters

Cooking Matters is a 6-week, hands-on nutrition and cooking educational series offered to limited resource participants in the Lowcountry. As a volunteer, you will be sharing your knowledge and skills to engage and encourage participants to choose healthier foods for a healthier lifestyle. Make a real difference in the lives of people at risk for hunger.

Basic Function:

  • Help facilitate low-income individuals at risk of hunger to select and prepare healthy low-cost food.

Primary Duties:

  • Manage class materials, including food, equipment and supplies.
  • Help facilitate classes by assisting with onsite or offsite class preparation and implementation; support the volunteer Chef and Nutrition Instructors during class.
  • Help with set up and clean up.
  • Assist with food shopping and classroom management, as needed
  • Work with participants, as needed.

Volunteer Work Schedule:

  • 3 hours a day, once a week for six consecutive weeks + lesson planning & prep time.

You will have the opportunity to work with other passionate volunteers as each team is composed of a nutritionist, chef, and class assistant. Volunteer instructors receive the curriculum that will be taught in each class. Most of all, our Cooking Matters classes are fun and exciting and provide you with some quality volunteer experiences.

*Cooking Matters classes take place at various locations throughout the Lowcountry, including Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg Counties.

Description

The Lowcountry Food Bank serves the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina and aims to distribute more than 24 million pounds of food each year. The Lowcountry Food Bank is a clearinghouse for donated food products that are distributed to a network of nearly 300 member feeding agencies including soup kitchens, homeless shelters and emergency food pantries. The Lowcountry Food Bank is a member of Feeding America and is committed to educating the public about the problems of and solutions to domestic hunger as well as advocating on behalf of our neighbors who experience hunger.


The LCFB will distribute more than 25 million pounds of food, including 6 million pounds of fresh produce, to 200,000 families, children and seniors in 2016. We distribute food through our three distribution centers of Yemassee, Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
