The HALO Girls Home Program Intern will provide the foundation of a family to teenage homeless girls living in the HALO Home, working with the Jefferson City Home Program Manager and assisting with all tasks related to HALO Jefferson City Youth needs. This is an excellent opportunity to gain a variety of experience in the non-profit sector.

  • Responsibilities include:

    • Working alongside Youth Advocates, assisting with youth progress through the programa through attending meetings and tracking resident goals and progress.

    • Transportation assistance to appointments, job interviews, grocery shopping, buying clothing, etc.

    • Assist with Daily Life Skill programming in the home

      • Assist with daily implementation of the programming curriculum as well as projects and/or outings designed for each resident in the home

      • Assist with gathering and implementing Self Study materials for residents who have completed the 5 week program, or are in school or work during program time.

      • Create and organize additional programming to be presented and facilitated with youth in our community

      • Document Daily Life Skill reports appropriately in Apricot for each resident and assists Program Manager in proper facilitation of life skill assessments.

  • Assist with Family Night program set up (Thursdays at 5:00pm)

    • Weekly planning for Life-Skills lessons

    • Planning of celebrations, conversations on areas of concern

    • Room set-up for lessons/dinner

    • Participation in Life-Skills Program

    • Organizing transportation requests for the week

    • Cleanup and chore assignments for the week

    • Assist in the home

    • Room set-up for new residents

    • Required paperwork and reporting on Apricot and Slack

    • Answering calls about housing inquiries

    • Assist in completing applications and intake with new residents

    • Working with volunteers in the home daily

    • Gaining a working knowledge of community resources that can be used by residents to increase their ability to grow and reach their goals

      • Other duties in the home that need attention going through donations, keeping areas tidy, office tasks, etc.

    • Event

    • Brainstorming with HALO team on workplaces to visit/job shadow

    • Assist in off-site events with youth

    • Plan and facilitate one on-site fun night for residents

    • Attend and participate in special fundraising events such as the Art Auction held each spring

Intern Orientation and Professional Development

Interns will attend a full orientation which includes a background check, fingerprinting and a valid driver's license. Professional Development will include: CPR training, Med-tech training, Class E license training, and weekly professional development through video conferencing with a licensed counselor from the HALO KC office. Trauma Informed Care Training prior to beginning internship in the home. Interns will also attend weekly staff meetings. Interns are asked to supply their own laptop during their time at HALO.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must exhibit strong organizational and communication skills, the ability to work with a team, and take initiative on all projects.

  • Also important to complete our required Trauma Informed Care training prior to beginning your internship work at HALO.

  • Needs to be efficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Minimum 1 semester commitment, one year commitment preferred.

  • HALO is staffed 24/7, 365 days a year. Minimum 15 hours per week of internship/practicum programs. These hours are a combination of days, evenings and weekends.

  • Please note this is an unpaid internship; however this an excellent opportunity to gain a variety of experience in the nonprofit sector.
