Description: Crisis Counseling Interns are crucial to the daily operation of Ampersand programs. Interns have many opportunities to provide direct support to clients and survivors in the Bluegrass region. Interns are often the first contact for survivors after an assault and provide invaluable assistance locating and accessing resources. Students seeking experience in the counseling, psychology, social work, and medical fields will be able to practically apply skills learned in the classroom in the field.
Essential duties include:
- Provide telephone support on our 24/7 support hotline
- provide emotional support to individuals
- answer questions on topics such as crime victims rights, the reporting process, and local resources
- complete initial intake paperwork with new clients
- Provide in-person support at hospital emergency rooms
- Respond to emergency rooms at area hospitals to provide emotional support and information to survivors of sexual assault
- Collect follow-up information for those seeking Ampersand services
- Collaborate with medical and criminal justice staff to ensure coordinated services to survivors seeking medical/forensic care
- Complete all Ampersand documentation of direct services on time and in compliance with Ampersand policy and procedure guidelines
Expectations:
Interns work in the office during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm, typically 8-12 hours a week in 4 hour shifts. Interns have the flexibility to choose their shifts every month. Crisis Counseling interns must be willing to drive up to 1 hour as part of their essential duties, although driving will not occur on every shift.
All interns accepted into the program will receive a free, 40-hour training on victims advocacy and counseling during the month of June. This training is required for all interns entering the program.
If you have further questions, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Alexandria Sehon at asehon@ampersandky.org or 859-618-2255
