Rain gardens are a beautiful AND functional solution to stormwater runoff. Learn how to create one!
The Gunpowder Valley Conservancy is looking for volunteers to help install a rain garden at a private residence in Middle River, MD. No gardening experience necessary! Appropriate for ages 7 and up. Community service learning hours available.
A rain garden is a special, water loving garden that helps soak up rain water from your roof or driveway. It is designed to capture water from a 1" rain storm and slowly infiltrate it back into the ground. By using beautiful, native flowers, grasses and even trees, a rain garden will beautify your yard while reducing stormwater impacts. It also provides habitat for wildlife, beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, and pollinators like butterflies.
What to expect: Dress for yard work (hat, long pants, sneakers/boots, sunscreen) and bring your own water bottle. Garden gloves and tools will be provided. Our hosts will provide lunch after the garden installation.
Location: Private Residence, 12329 Eastern Avenue, Middle River, MD 21220
