Science Education Mentor
Duration: 3 months
Time Commitment: 5 hours per week
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage 3rd and/or 6th grade students in rigorous science education.
- Prepare materials for hands-on science lessons.
- Assist with instruction of lessons as needed.
- Assist with classroom management.
- Help students to believe and achieve in science.
- Expose underserved youth to innovative science and conservation curriculum.
- Spark student interest in science careers.
- One 5 hour shift per week from May 7th to July 13th, 2018.
- Time for the shift varies between 7am-4pm.
- One required orientation for all Science Education Mentors.
- Thursday, May 3rd 4:30pm-7:30pm
- One required field trip training based on your chosen grade level.
- 3rd Grade Field Trip Training: Wednesday, May 16th from 3pm-6pm at La Jolla Tidepools
- 6th Grade Field Trip Training: Wednesday, May 30th from 4pm-7pm
- Interest in the science, conservation, or education fields.
- Commitment to acting as a role model for underserved youth.
- Willing to pay a one-time $25 for an Ocean Discovery Institute volunteer uniform.
- Interest in gaining education experience.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish or other languages.

Description
The programs of Ocean Discovery Institute offer intensive, hands-on learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth. Programs are offered throughout the year. The programs employ three basic strategies: classroom and field-based programming in partnership with Title 1 schools, intensive after-school and summer programs, community-based habitat restoration events.
