If you like one-on-one and small group interaction, are a cancer survivor, have been a caregiver, or have had a family member or friend diagnosed with cancer, you will appreciate the experience of being a American Cancer Society volunteer at Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center (TMC). As a trained volunteer you would interact with cancer patients and caregivers and connect them to essential information and support services provided by the American Cancer Society, Memorial Hermann, as well as other organizations.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Commit to serve one 4-hour shift per week
  • Complete the American Cancer Society Volunteer Training (available online).
  • Fill out the Memorial Hermann Volunteer Application online at http://www.memorialhermann.org/locations/texas-medical-center/adult-program-for-volunteers/
  • Complete a Memorial Hermann background check
  • Attend a Memorial Hermann Volunteer Orientation (available monthly).
  • Pass a General Health Screening which will be provided at no cost by Memorial Hermann TMC.
  • Purchase Volunteer Uniform ($20-25).
Duties
  • Greet patients and their caregivers in the waiting area and help create a welcoming environment.
  • Provide compassionate assistance to cancer patients, family members and friends.
  • Help patients identify barriers to care that they may be facing.
  • Connect patients and caregivers with day-to-day support services by filling out a Patient Referral Form (provided by the American Cancer Society).

Essential Skills Needed

    • Volunteers must be dependable and reliable
    • Volunteers must have strong interpersonal skills, such as meeting and greeting visitors
    • Volunteers must demonstrate a readiness to help others and the ability to maintain healthy relationships with patients and visitors, including understanding the boundaries associated with a volunteer role.

Volunteer Shifts

  • Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.
