Learn about plants and get your hands dirty while helping the oldest horticultural society care for its beautiful gardens! Volunteers work with horticulturalists to propagate, plant, prune, weed, mulch, rake, water and complete other tasks that are vital to the success of the plants and gardens. No experience necessary - we provide on-site orientation and training. It's a great way to learn through service, meet new people and care for our environment.
Our winter garden volunteer opportunities focus on supporting our Seed to Table Vegetable Garden. Tasks include working in our Seed Library (seed cleaning and packaging), organizing seeds and planting material, making signs and labels for the gardens (all gardens, not just Seed to Table), and planning for next year. On nice days during the winter, we will continue to prepare the garden for the spring, but most work will be indoors at the Putnam building. We will either work indoors or outdoors, but not both. We will also be making some value-added products from plants harvested in the garden (such as packaging tea and culinary herbs, making some lip balm and hand salves, etc...) There is a LOT to learn from working with us through the winter to help get the gardens ready for next season!
Gardening days are on Mondays 9:30 am - 12 pm. To learn more about our volunteer sessions or to sign up, contact Amy Rodrigues, Volunteer Engagement Manager, at arodrigues@masshort.org or 617-933-4934.
