Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a writing or research coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work.

Volunteer Role: Gardening Coach

About the program: Pre-kindergartners are learning about gardening and planting with Monica Wellington’s Zinnia’s Flower Garden, the story of a girl who, with the help of her cat and dog friends, demonstrates the skills needed to grow beautiful blossoms. Students will be assisted by coaches as they plant their own flower seeds.

Through our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula and meet Common Core Learning Standards, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they teach a genre of writing and guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book. BtB programs have a successful record of building comprehension skills and motivating engaged readers at schools around the city.
